  • Research summary

Kidney transplantation is widely considered the gold standard treatment for patients with end stage renal disease who are fit enough for the procedure, as compared with other life-supporting renal replacement therapies such as dialysis, it is associated with longer life and signficantly decreased healthcare burden as well as being believed to improve quality of life. The actual evidence for quality of life, as opposed to quality of health, is incomplete and testing this assumption will form the basis of this study. We propose to answer this question by proportionate review of quality of life and patient-reported outcome measures collected as part of standard clinical care.
In this exploratory study, we aim to use the data from the HR-QOL and EQ5D questionnaires to determine which measures of health status and quality of life items are the most relevant, inclusive and important to patients on the waiting list and those undergoing renal transplantation. We aim to subsequently apply this analysis to future transplant practice and for it to guide decisions regarding transplantation to appropriate transplant recipients. There are three areas that are of particular interest in this study.
Firstly we will assess the waitlisted for transplantation patients and analyse the impact of suspension on quality of life cross-sectionally and longitudinally.
Secondly, we will analyse the impact of transplant offer and subsequent renal transplantation at 3,6 and 12 months.
Thirdly we will analyse the collected quality of life date to assess the impact of quality of life in different donor and recipient risk categories.
