Research summary
Management of Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) is a rapidly developing field. Bianchi described the first lengthening procedure which could be utilised in this group of patients in 1980. Prior to this alongside improvements in parenteral nutrition and transplant, children with SBS had a high morbidity and mortality rate. Recent improvements in these areas have expanded the inclusion criteria for children, with more being referred for active management as opposed to withdrawel of care with early life gastrointestinal catastrophes. We aim to study the quality of life of this population of children as well as the impact that this condition has on their parents and family.
