Research summary
Many therapists work within intensive care units (also known as critical care). This includes physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, and psychologists. All these therapies have an important role in treating patients admitted to critical care, and in their recovery from being so unwell. Recent guidelines have supported the role of these therapists in critical care but the guidelines lack detail as to the exact role of each therapy group and their responsibilities.
The aim of this study is to gather information from expert therapists working in critical care about their views of the role of therapies in critical care, the day-to-day jobs that they do and what each therapy offers to critical care. We will add this knowledge to that already known to create a complete picture of the role of therapies in critical care.
We will gather the information by asking expert therapists to join a small 'virtual' group to discuss their views on the topic. There will be 7 such groups (2 physiotherapy, 2 dietetics, 1 psychology, 1 speech and language therapy and 1 occupational therapy) with eight to ten therapists in each group. We will record the discussions and transcribe (to be completed by research team) the recordings into words; these will be analysed to identify views consistent across the groups.
It is hoped that the results of this study will help to identify the role of therapists within critical care. The results will also be used as part of future projects looking at the therapy workforce in critical care.
