Research summary
COVID-19 causes a wide range of symptoms. Some people with COVID-19 get very ill and need to go to hospital. Some are so ill they need to go to intensive care and be put on a ventilator (breathing machine), and some may die. We know that severe illness, and treatment in intensive care can cause long lasting problems, which may reduce the quality of life of the patient. We want to know how hospital treatment for COVID-19 affects the quality of life of the patient once they leave the hospital.
Patients will be asked if they would like to take part when they are getting ready to leave the hospital or during a follow-up encounter. If they agree to take part we will ask them a series of questions over the telephone at three different times. First when they have been out of hospital for 3 months, then at 6 months and finally after they have been out of hospital for 1 year. We will look at their answers and compare them to other information we know about how long they were in hospital, the treatment they had in hospital, their age and gender, ethnicity as well as other things.
By asking people these questions as they recover from their time in hospital with COVID-19 we want to find out what their quality of life is. This can help us give better information to patients and their families when they come to hospital with COVID-19. It will also help doctors to design services to support people recovering from their time in hospital and make their quality of life better.
