  • Research summary

LHCH is an early experience centre for Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA). This is a new technology for ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) which research suggests will be a “game changer” in our field. Experience to date suggests that PFA is faster than existing technology, with the potential to improve safety, throughput and cost effectiveness.

This procedure is usually undertaken under general anaesthetic, as it is perceived to be uncomfortable or perhaps painful. However it is licensed for use under mild conscious sedation as well and has occasionally been used in this way. There is currently no published evidence for performing this procedure under mild sedation however.

The potential benefit of performing this procedure under mild sedation include: faster procedure time, quicker recovery, less post-procedure discomfort (e.g. sore throat from general anaesthetic) and potentially faster discharge time.
