Research summary
Prudent Healthcare is a concept which seeks to change the culture of the NHS in Wales by ensuring that healthcare fits the needs and circumstances of patients and actively avoids wasteful care that is not to the patients' benefit. Prudent Healthcare recognises the important contribution that members of the public have in maintaining their health and wellbeing.
This study will advance our understanding of public, patient, and clinician awareness, experiences, and views about Prudent Healthcare in order to find ways of promoting the adoption of Prudent Healthcare principles across Wales.
The study comprises two separate workpackages, one focussing on public/patient attitudes and one focussing on clinician attitudes, and will:
• Determine public (including patient and carer) and clinician understanding of, and attitudes towards, a Prudent Healthcare approach.
• Explore public and clinician experiences of using/ providing healthcare prudently.
• Explore public and clinician views about the perceived benefits, facilitators, and barriers to Prudent Healthcare, including views about why other parties may support or be resistant to Prudent Healthcare.
• Identify which component parts of Prudent Healthcare (eg. co-production, reduction in over-diagnosis) are particularly supported, or a cause for concern.
We will conduct qualitative interviews and focus groups with diverse patient groups and members of the public, including people who live in deprived communities and people who live in more affluent communities and with a geographic spread across Wales facilitating a representative perspective of views from the Welsh public. Our clinician sample will also be drawn from across Wales and include a diverse range of health professionals including doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals from primary care, secondary care, and emergency care and GP out of hours (unscheduled care).REC name
