Research summary
Development of a psychosis screening tool for use in adults with intellectual disabilities
Psychosis occurs at a higher rate in people with intellectual disability (ID) than in the general population. Despite this, there are no screening measures which have been developed specifically to be used with people with ID. This study aims to develop a screening tool to detect psychosis in people with mild and moderate ID. Three groups of participants will be recruited:
Focus groups
• Adults aged 16 or older with an ID who have psychosis, and are not currently experiencing symptoms.
• Family or paid carers of adults with an ID who have psychosis.
Pilot group
• Adults aged 16 or older with an ID who have psychosis, and are currently experiencing symptoms.
Testing group
• Adults aged 16 or older with an ID who have psychosis, and are currently experiencing symptoms.
• Adults aged 16 or older with an ID, who do not have psychosis.
• Adults aged 16 or older without an ID, who have psychosis, and are currently experiencing symptoms.
Study information will be given to NHS community and inpatient mental health services. People meeting criteria will be told about the study by a clinician they know. If they are interested, they will be given information sheets.
A trainee clinical psychologist will speak to everyone interested and will answer any questions they have. If they wish to take part, they will then be asked for their consent, and/or the consent of their welfare guardian.
The focus group will discuss their experiences of psychosis. The pilot group will be interviewed with the new scale, and asked for feedback. The testing group will be interviewed with the final scale. Focus groups and individual interviews will take place on NHS grounds, lasting up to 2 hours.REC name
