Research summary
The impact of dementia extends beyond the individual with the condition and can affect the emotional and physical wellbeing of those caring for them.
The present study aims to investigate the impact of caring for somebody with dementia on the mood and quality of life of the caregiver. To this end, we will recruit carers via Alzheimer’s Society support groups and administer a range of questionnaires. The questionnaires will examine depression and anxiety amongst carers, as well as the burden they perceive they are under and the support they feel they gain from other friends/family members. The study will also characterise the demographic profile of those providing care.
The results of the study will be valuable in their own right, providing insight into the psychological effects of providing care for somebody with dementia. They will also be used in a comparative analysis with pre-existing data from a similar study completed in Spain. This will shed light on cross-cultural differences in the provision of informal care.
