  • Research summary

Health policy makers take into consideration both the costs and the clinical effectiveness of interventions when making decisions on allocating resources. In economic evaluations, health benefits are commonly measured with generic, or else health-related quality of life, questionnaires which consist of physical, social, and emotional dimensions. The most validated questionnaire in the UK is the EQ-5D, however, it is notoriously insensitive to certain impairments of health, most notably hearing loss.
This study is attempting to increase the sensitivity of the EQ-5D to hearing loss by adding an extra dimension related to communication. The aim is to assess whether the developed questionnaire, EQ-5D + ‘Communication Bolt-on’, is valid and reliable for use and also whether the results are consistent with other standardised questionnaires. This will be assessed using statistical analyses and comparing it to other validated measures of social participation and listening difficulties.
The study will involve two sites, the audiology clinic of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. It will include a convenience sample of adults with a wide range of hearing loss (from mild to profound hearing loss) and members of the general public with no hearing difficulties.

Participation will involve providing information about demographic characteristics, completing a series of questionnaires, and taking part in a listening test.

    1. Demographics questionnaire
    2. Global Ratings of Change questionnaire (GRC)

    Three disease-specific questionnaires:
    3. Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly questionnaire (HHIE)
    4. Social Participation Restrictions Questionnaire (SPaRQ)
    5. Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing questionnaire (SSQ12)

    One listening test:
    6. Digit Triple Test (DTT)

Three health-related quality of life questionnaires:
    7. EuroQol EQ-5D-5L + ‘Communication Bolt-on’
    8. Health Utility Index 3 (HUI3)
    9. York Hearing Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (YHRQL)

Completion of questionnaires requires approximately 1 hour. Participants will complete the same questionnaires at baseline and at after a short delay; i.e. a ‘2-week’ follow-up assessment conducted anywhere between 1 and 4 weeks after baseline.
