In accordance with the New Way of Working, and amendments made to the Mental Health Act (2007;MHA) it is now possible for a number of professionals to be eligible for the role of approved clinician (AC). An Approved Clinician can act as the Responsible Clinician (RC) for Patients. This means that in accordance with the Mental Health Act they hold full responsibility for a patients care when detained under the act or on a community treatment order (CTO).
The aim of this research project is to ascertain the experiences of psychologists working as approved clinicians, taking on responsible clinician duites. This is due to the differnt nature of this role and potential conflict with the role of a psychologist. It Is hoped the research will enable better understanding of training needs, increase understanding of how psychologists maybe best supported in these roles including staff wellbeing, and inform career pathways, whilst maintaining standards of patient care.
