Research summary
The proposed study will be the first to follow-up a UK sample who have had bariatric surgery between 2 and 8 years ago. It will be conducted within the Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust. In 2012, over half (54%) of adults in the Yorkshire and Humber region were overweight or obese and this figure is predicted to rise to nearly 70% by 2050. Nationally the figure for adult obesity is expected to rise to 60% by 2050. Bariatric surgery is one of the most cost effective methods for managing obesity but over a third of patients do not achieve or maintain successful weight loss. The factors which are associated with successful weight loss are currently not known.
This study aims to evaluate the long term outcomes of WLS performed between 2-8 years ago at a Mid Yorkshire Hospital NHS Trust. We will try to identify which psychological characteristics and other information could be used to predict successful long term weight loss following bariatric surgery. The information obtained by this study could provide useful screening tools for future clinical use to better align patient characteristics with treatment options.
