Research summary
The research is commissioned by the Burdett Trust for Nursing with the aim of creating and developing a new innovative toolkit (PROTECToolkit) designed to safeguard and protect older people, staff, and visitors in care homes across England during an epidemic/pandemic situation.
To achieve the research aim, four work streams were introduced as follows.
Work Stream 1 (WS1): Establishment of a Delphi panel of leading experts and stakeholders associated with the care sector during the Covid-19 pandemic
Work Stream 2 (WS2): Online survey of nurses and health and social care staff working in care homes to explore their experiences, as well as the issues identified in WS1.
WS1 was approved with the recommendation for amendment to be submitted for WS2 (Online Survey), which was approved in November 2021 (REC Ref: 21/WM/0166; IRAS Project ID: 298688). The ethics committee also recommended a full submission for WS3 (Feasibility testing and evaluation of the PROTECToolkit). This application is for WS3.
Work Stream 3 (WS3): Feasibility study of the Toolkit, which is intended to support nurses, and health and social care staff working in care homes during a pandemic. This will involve two parts:
Part 1a will be the completion of the Toolkit in participating care homes by staff.
Part 1b will be retesting of the Toolkit in selected care homes following revision (amendments will be sought for revision of the Toolkit).
Part 2 will be an evaluation of the Toolkit with care home staff.
Work Stream 4 (WS4): Sharing and dissemination of findings across stakeholder networks, professional and regulatory organisations, e.g., Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and the International Council of Nurses (ICN).
