  • Research summary

Poorly controlled oral secretions adversely affect the quality of life of patients with MND and can affect their ability to use life prolonging interventions, such as Non-Invasive Ventilation. Management of this problem is largely by expert opinion and consensus guidelines, which are not evidence based. We have previously demonstrated that up to 50% of patients with MND have unsatisfactorily controlled secretion problems. We have developed a questionnaire (clinical saliva scale - CSS-MND) to detect secretion problems and assess the effectiveness of the various treatments for this problem. The primary outcome of this project is to further evaluate the CSS-MND and determine the ability of the CSS to detect meaningful change to patients over time and in response to treatments for saliva problems. The conclusions drawn from this project will inform future trial design for improving secretion management in patients with MND.
