Research summary
COVID-19 is a disease caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2, or coronavirus for short. The majority of people have a mild illness which they manage at home. Some people require admission to hospital for extra support including oxygen therapy. Several research studies have shown that very unwell patients in the intensive care unit may benefit from being turned on their front (prone position). The prone position is thought to increase the amount of lung available to deliver oxygen to the blood and improve their chances of recovery. However, we do not know whether prone positioning helps patients outside of critical care settings.
The purpose of the PRONE-COVID study is to understand whether prone positioning can help improve oxygenation in patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 and in non-covid-19 control populations. The study will also assess how well this procedure is tolerated. The results of the study may also help inform clinical practice at Addenbrookes hospital and more widely.
