Research summary
The study aims to improve nurses’ and healthcare support workers’ passion at work on inpatient wards. Previous research suggests that the majority of nurses employed by the NHS in England experience poor job satisfaction which has been found to negatively affect turnover, job performance and be related to increased levels of emotional exhaustion in the workplace. One way to improve both staff experience at work and the productivity of the organisation is to therefore increase staff passion for their role. One important factor in this field is the communication between staff and patients after they have been discharged.
This project examines the impact of gratitude messages aimed at increasing the communication between staff (i.e. nurses and healthcare support workers) and patients. This will involve receiving ‘Thank you’ cards from discharged patients in which they will be invited to express their gratitude for the care they received on the ward. Participants (nurses and healthcare support workers) will be asked to fill in an online job satisfaction survey before and after receiving the 'Thank you' cards so that their responses can be compared.
Nurses and healthcare support workers in adult mental health inpatient wards substantively employed by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) will be eligible to take part in the study. There are 20 adult acute inpatient wards across SLaM, excluding four Psychiatric Intensive Care Units.
The study will last approximately 8 months, from the first ward visit to meet staff and sign them up to the study, through to data collection, the delivery of the 'Thank you' cards, and the follow-up.
