Research summary
Patient experience plays a central part in evaluating the quality of care received by patients under the NHS. UK Government policy encourages the use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) as they facilitate patient-clinician communication and can be used to identify a patient’s concerns and unmet needs. Incorporating PROMs into clinical practice has been shown to improve processes, patient outcomes and overall care satisfaction in patients with a variety of chronic illnesses such as cancer. Although there are generic PROMs available which are often used to measure patient experience in clinical trials, there are currently no PROMs that are designed to specifically capture the routine impact of radiotherapy and proton beam therapy (PBT) on cancer patients.
The aim of the PROMOTE study is to develop a radiotherapy/PBT-specific PROM that can be utilised and implement as part of standard clinical practice. PROMOTE is a mixed methods study based on the recommended methodology for developing a PROM. This is a single-site study set within the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and will involve the recruitment of clinical experts in radiotherapy/PBT side effects, and patients who have undergone radiotherapy/PBT to the Breast, Sarcoma, Brain, Prostate, Lung or Head & Neck.
As these patient cohorts are key stakeholders to the service, their participation in the development of the PROM is central to the outcome of this study. Conducted over four stages, this study includes a review of the literature, clinical expert surveys, semi-structured patient interviews and patient surveys. The recruitment of healthcare professionals will occur in Stage 2 (anticipated recruitment period of May 2023 – July 2023). The recruitment of patients will occur in Stage 3 and Stage 4 (anticipated recruitment period of July 2023 – November 2023, and November 2023 – January 2023).
