Research summary
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis and causes significant joint pain and disability. Its incidence will increase with the ageing population and it is already a major cause of health care expenditure. Current treatments for OA have major limitations and safe, long-term analgesic treatments are needed.
This is a study looking at painful knee OA. Methotrexate is commonly used to treat inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, to great effect. Recent studies suggest that inflammation is also important in causing pain in OA. We believe that treating this inflammation, with methotrexate, will reduce pain in people with knee OA.
