Research summary
The study is a joint collaboration between the University of Manchester (UoM) and the University of Newcastle (UoN), Australia. We have received funding to carry out first two stages of a four stage study to develop a PROM for severe asthma patients. This application supports the conduct of stages I and II. Additional funding will be sought by UoM and UoN to carry out stages III and IV.
In stage I of the study, qualitative interviews (n=10) and focus groups (n=5-7) will be conducted with severe asthma patients who are receiving care at the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust (UHSM). Patients will be recruited from routine outpatient clinics. All interviews will be audio recorded and encrypted in real time. The recordings will be anonymised and transcribed verbatim by the research team
Potential items for inclusion in the PROM-SA will be extracted from the interview and focus group transcripts and shared with collaborators at UoN. All extracted items will be anonymised. UoN will also share extracted items from the interviews and focus groups they have conducted in Stage I.
In stage II of the study, a draft item list will be scrutinised for clarity and ease of understanding through cognitive debriefing with severe asthma patients (n=5).
