  • Research summary

Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) have been introduced in the NHS as a means to aid in providing improved quality of care for patients and assess treatment outcome. To date, no PROMs have been adopted by the NHS for use in the field of orthodontics.

The aim of the study is to develop a PROM to investigate factors affecting quality of life in adult orthodontic patients.

This study will be divided in 2 parts:

    PART 1: Semi Structured Interviews
The first part will involve semi-structured interviews with orthodontic patients who meet the inclusion criteria. They will provide written consent if they agree to participate in the study.

Miss. Sarah Merza will conduct the interviews. She will receive interviewing training at the Eastman Dental Hospital. Approximately 15-20 patients will be interviewed and interviews will cease when no new themes are raised. The interviews will be transcribed immediately after they have ended.

After the interviews have been completed, a Framework analysis will be used to analyse the data. This type of analysis groups the data collected into themes and then summarizes the data into a framework which will then be used to identify the main themes. These themes will be used to develop the questionnaire.

It is anticipated that the questionnaire will be approximately 2 to 3 sides of A4 and will follow a tick-box format. The questionnaire is to be completed by patients before and after receiving orthodontic treatment.

    PART 2: Questionnaire distribution
Patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria will be identified approached by a research team member and asked if they would be willing to take part in the study. Written consent to participate in the study will be obtained.

The questionnaire will be distributed to the participants to be completed by them before and after orthodontic treatment.
