Research summary
Background:
Knowing about their prognosis might help patients to make choices about their care that match their values and needs. It might also improve communication between the healthcare team and patients and consequently the quality of care.
However, it is unclear whether the understanding about their prognosis might scare or reassure patients, or how it affects their quality of life.
Why:
In this study we want to learn more about how much patients understand about their illness when they are referred to the Enhanced Supportive Care service at UCLH and how much information they appreciate.
We also want to see if there is a connection between how much patients understand and how they feel emotionally, their quality of life, trust in medical professionals, and how they feel about the care they receive.
This information will help doctors and nurses to share information and communicate with patients in a way that feels helpful and supportive. This is an important first step in creating ways to respect patients' choices and provide personalised care.
Who:
Adult patients with cancer who are referred to the Enhanced Supportive Care team will be asked if they want to take part in this study. Patients who have trouble understanding the questionnaires because of memory problems (like dementia) or if they do not speak English will not be able to participate. After informed consent has been obtained, a member of the research team (Christoph Becker, CB) will collect data on sociodemographic characteristics and baseline clinical data (e.g. diagnosis, treatment history). Participants will complete a questionnaire to assess patients' understanding of prognosis, psychological symptoms, and quality of life. The questionnaire will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. It can be completed in a paper-based format (either alone or supported by CB), over the phone or using an on-line format, whichever is most convenient for the participant.
