Research summary
The 2019 NHS long-term plan recognises that for any issue, somewhere within the NHS a gold-standard approach or system already exists, however it has not been adopted widely. In healthcare, understanding how to effectively replicate interventions that have been proven successful in one area remains a significant challenge. PROMPT (PRactical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training) is a training intervention for maternity staff that research has shown can lead to improved maternal and neonatal clinical outcomes, safety culture and reduced litigation. However, when PROMPT has been introduced to new units the impact has been varied. To combat this, the Health Foundation funded PROMPT to pilot 'Social Franchising' as a new method of spreading PROMPT to 5 maternity units. The social franchising approach has a few key characteristics, including a signed agreement outlining roles and responsibilities, structured on-going support and networking with other sites, as well as quality assurance measures. This study aims to evaluate the experience of key stakeholders at the 5 pilot units with the Social Franchising approach, in order to investigate its feasibility as a method to help improvement interventions spread effectively in the NHS.
