Research summary
Procalcitonin (PCT) is a marker of infection. However, plasma concentrations of procalcitonin are also increased in patients with heart failure and indicate a poor prognosis. Other markers of inflammation are also often elevated in patients with heart failure and this has been attributed to translocation of bacteria or endotoxins from the gasto-intestinal tract. We intend to use randomly assigned, one-week courses of azithromycin or metronidazole as therapeutic probes to investigate potential mechanisms leading to increased PCT in heart failure. This may help determine the mechanism for elevated PCT in heart failure and whether it is a possible therapeutic target.
