Research summary
Antibiotic associated diarrhoea (AAD) and Clostridium difficle associated diarrhoea (CDAD) are serious health care acquired infections occuring after antibiotic use. Probiotics have been proposed as a prevention and some studies have shown benefits. We want to establish whether giving the probitioc VSL#3 to a wide range of patients on antibiotics prevents the development of AAD and CDAD. 450 Patients in 4 hospitals will be recruited to receive either VSL#3 or a placebo. Outcome will be measured by how many develop AAD and CDAD, length of hospital stay and 30 day mortality.
