  • Research summary

Can we predict which patients will be distressed about appearance changes following a burn injury?

    Why/What?
The study aims to increase the ability to predict which patients will develop distress about their changed appearance (appearance anxiety) following a burn injury. It will explore whether certain ways of managing emotions and thoughts during hospital admission predicts appearance anxiety later on. This research will help burns services improve psychological screening, and help identify patients who may later develop appearance anxiety so they can be offered early help. It will also help us understand why appearance anxiety develops in some patients but not others.

    Who?
Adult burns patients admitted to hospital will be invited to participate.

    Where?
Burns patients will be recruited from four or five NHS burns services.

    How?
Participants will be asked to complete four questionnaires when they are in hospital, plus two single-item rating scales and a single-item measure of socio-economic status. These will usually take up to 30 minutes to complete and measure appearance anxiety, post-traumatic stress, certain ways of managing emotions and thoughts, distress related to Covid-19, and perceived noticeability of injuries. Demographic (gender, age, ethnicity) and injury information will be collected from medical records. Participants will be asked to complete the same four questionnaires and two single-item rating scales two months and six months later, as well as a fifth questionnaire measuring work and social functioning. These will again usually take up to 30 minutes to complete and may be completed via postal return, online, or through a telephone-/video-call.
