Research summary
Gastrointestinal endoscopy is the investigation of people’s guts using flexible cameras. Over two million procedures are performed in the UK each year and we need to ensure that quality and safety are maintained.
However, issues with safety still occur in endoscopy. In order to learn from these, we need to be able to detect problems, but our current means of doing so could be improved. This is where the patient voice comes in. Previous research has shown that patients themselves are able to pick up incidents that are otherwise missed by current methods. Patients also see things from a different perspective. We want to apply these concepts in endoscopy.
Our previous project involved patients to help us to develop a patient tool that can be used to report safety incidents. We call this the PRISE (patient reported incidents of safety in endoscopy) tool.
This study will assess the usefulness of this tool and help us what types of safety incidents patients can report. We will analyse the information gathered to see how effective this tool is, using a variety of statistical methods. We will assess safety through a variety of question topics to understand how patients report safety.
We hope that this study will provide the foundation for a tool that could be used in everyday practice to help improve safety in endoscopy. This has the potential to improve the care of many patients over the coming years.
