Research summary
We propose to investigate the known risk factors that increase susceptibility to MS in asymptomatic relatives of people with MS. We have previously demonstrated that by comprehensively risk profiling people with MS and their relatives, it is possible to differentiate between people with MS, their first degree relatives and healthy controls. In order to better understand both disease causation and potentially study preventive strategies, we need to study factors leading to disease development prospectively. Given the relatively young age of people diagnosed with MS this needs to be primarily in children/adolescents/young adults. Other studies, focussing on adults, miss those at highest risk, who will have already been diagnosed.
In this study we will prospectively study relatives of people with MS, with a focus on first and second degree relatives in childhood and adolescence. We will prospectively gather data and blood samples on people with MS, their relatives, and healthy controls, and follow up participants. During follow up we will establish who develops MS, retrospectively match them to other participants, and examine the changes that occur in the years prior to MS development.
