Research summary
The Study aims to assess prevalent and incident stroke and/or AF in one area of North West England, including associated clinical risk factors, multimorbidity, time trends, and outcomes, besides development and evaluation of clinical risk models and the dynamic nature of changing clinical risk and multimorbidity risk factors in stroke patients.
The Project will support an NHS initiative at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (MWL) aimed at better understanding of the risk factors and markers of stroke and stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) (or diagnosed with AF after initially presenting with stroke) and their comorbidities, as well as epidemiology related to prevalent and incident AF and Stroke. The initiative will have as a goal the development of a robust AF and Stroke Pathway to guide the clinical care and management of AF and Stroke. The Project will support work towards (1) enhancing existing AF and Stroke pathways; (2) contributing to a goal of improved stroke prevention in AF patients; and (3) providing the foundation for robust data collection to support the CIPHA dataset and inform future related research work and studies.
