Research summary
The prevalence of Adenomyosis is largely unknown due to its overlap in symptoms profile with endometriosis, and the fact that the two conditions may often exist together. This may imply that women are treated inappropriately for endometriosis only and whether additional interventions are required if there is co-existing adenomyosis.
Throughout the course of this research we aim to determine overall prevalence of adenomyosis in women undergoing hysterectomy. We will also compare the prevalence of adenomyosis in those having hysterectomy for endometriosis compared with pre-menopausal women undergoing hysterectomy for other benign conditions and correlate the diagnosis of adenomyosis on preoperative imaging with pathology at hysterectomy.
This will be achieved by completing a retrospective review of hospital records for all premenopausal women having hysterectomy in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, between 1/1/19 and 31/12/19. This time period was chosen as surgery for benign gynaecological conditions was largely suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic.
