Research summary
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health concern. This condition can affect any ocular tissue- however this remains a rare condition.
There are very few clinical findings which can help the Ophthalmologist in making a correct clinical decision. Currently the National Institute for Clinical Excellence has guidelines for tuberculosis , however there is little recognition/guidance for Ocular Tuberculosis. There is no data in the United Kingdom with regards to the incidence of Ocular Tuberculosis and little remains known whether clinical management of this condition varies in the Ophthalmology centres in the UK or not.
This study will be a survey of Presumed Ocular Tuberculosis using prospective case ascertainment through the British Ophthalmological Surveillance Unit (BOSU- ran by The Royal College of Ophthalmologist)- A reporting card is sent by the Royal College Ophthalmologist to all UK Ophthalmology consultants. Any new reported cases will be forwarded to the investigators.
An initial and follow up (at 12 months) questionnaire to collect data will be posted to the reporting clinicians. All data collected will be stored securely and analysed using Microsoft Access and Excel on the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast trust.
This prospective survey will be invaluable in finding information on the number of annual cases of Ocular Tuberculosis, the impact on the vision of affected patients and current treatment regimes used.
