Research summary
The benefits of taking sugary drinks prior to surgery have been reported in certain groups of patients attending for major surgery. It is expected that these benefits should be reproducible in other patient groups however no evidence currently exists for their use prior to elective caesarean delivery.
We propose to conduct a study of pregnant women booked for planned caesarean delivery. We will ask them to take either a sugar containing or water prior to surgery.
The main goal is to demonstrate a reduction in the number of mothers who have ketones in their urine, a marker that the body's supply of carbohydrate have been depleted. Other outcomes which we will be looking at are: mothers' level of anxiety and sensation of thirst before surgery, mothers' grip strength before and after surgery and how long mothers stay in hospital after surgery.REC name
