    Aim
This study will construct a questionnaire that asks people how good their care was when they had a cancer emergency.

    Background
People with cancer often need to access emergency care for serious problems relating to their cancer or cancer treatment. When this happens people are often very anxious. They may be worried about how doctors and nurses speak to them, the advice they are given and treatments they received, and waiting times to be seen and treated. These matters are very important, especially at that time. If patients can tell doctors and nurses what they think of their care, then hospital teams can consider how to improve care. When the study is finished, hospital teams will use the questionnaire to plan changes to improve services.

    Design and Methods
To ensure the questions in the questionnaire are useful we need to interview some patients with cancer and ask them what they think are the most important things about their care. We will also interview doctors and nurses to ask them about the most important things that make their care the best it can be. This information will help construct the questionnaire. We will then ask some other patients to fill in the questionnaire to test it. This will show how well the questions are understood, and whether they need to be phrased differently or removed. When the patients and health professionals who help us with the study are happy with the questions, we will ask patients who have had emergencies at one hospital in southern England to complete the questionnaire over a four-week period to test how useful it is. Patients will be sent a questionnaire after they have gone home. When the study is finished we will seek to test the questionnaire in other hospitals.
