  • Research summary

The Kidney PREM (patient reported experience measure) is a national survey conducted annually with the aim to help renal teams to understand patients’ feelings about their care experiences, show where improvements can be made and to give a nation picture of the experience of care. It is completed online and in paper (in renal units) and in 2021 was completed by 12,416 patients. It can be completed in English, Welsh, Urdu, or Gujarati. The survey covers 13 themes: access to the kidney team, support, communication, patient information, fluid and diet, needling (for HD patients), tests, shared decision making, privacy and dignity, scheduling, and planning, how the kidney team treats you, transport and the environment of the renal unit (KCUK, 2021).

However, the sample of those who completed the PREM has been predominately White (76.9% in 2021), with only 7 patients responding to the survey in a language other than English (5 of these in Welsh). Those from an Asian background remain especially under-represented compared to the kidney disease population (12.5%) and the proportion who participated previously (10.1% in 2019).

The aim of this study therefore is to interview patients from minority ethnic backgrounds, especially those currently under-represented by the PREM, such as those from Asian backgrounds. The in-depth one-to-one interviews will ask patients about their experience of care and whether the questions on the PREM are relevant to them. The interviews will ask patients about their experience of care including:
    - How they would describe the care they receive and access to their care team
    - How they describe the information received from the renal care team
    - How the care team discussed decisions with them
    - How they describe the organisation of appointments
    - How the renal team treats them in appointments
    - About the environment of the renal unit
