Research summary
Prehabilitation can be used as an umbrella term to encompass a number of different targets for change before surgery, such as the identification and management of abnormal preoperative blood results, lifestyle interventions, and pre-operative exercise therapy to optimise patient fitness.
Research has shown that preoperative physical therapy, especially inspiratory muscle training, prevents some postoperative complications such as pneumonia and can reduce length of hospital stay.
The initial phase of developing a prehabilitation service will involve establishing the safety and feasibility of preoperative exercise and inspiratory muscle training in cardiac surgery patients, as well as the identification of any practical issues with the delivery of prehabiliation before surgery.
This study will therefore investigate the feasibilty of pre-operative exercise training for patients awaiting Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG). We will compare a preoperative exercise intervention to current standard of care for elective CABG patients.
