  • Research summary

This research aims to explore pregnant women and midwives'preference in completing the booking questions via a mobile application or an internet link rather than spending 90 minutes at the initial booking appointment with a midwife.

Mobile applications (apps) are gradually taking over our daily lives as advance technology usage has evolved our day to day activities (Power and Gordon, 2015). Mobile apps on almost any medical topic is accessible to consumers and available for immediate download (Boulous et al., 2014). The use of smartphone to download apps have been commonly used in the medical field as both personal and professional tool (Franko and Tirrel, 2012).

A qualitative study will be conducted through the use of a semi-structured interview which will incorporate open and closed-end questions. About twelve participants (which include six pregnant women who are 20 weeks gestation and above and six registered midwives of different band levels) will be interviewed.
Pregnant women who already had booking appointment with the midwife and registered midwives are eligible to participate in the study. Pregnant women who are yet to have booking appointment with the midwife, women in labour, postnatal women, obstetrician and non-midwifery maternity worker would not be eligible to participate in the study.

Pregnant women will be recruited through the hospital-based obstetrician-led antenatal clinic and the community-based midwifery led antenatal clinics. Midwives at different band level will be approached whilst at work and will be reassured that they have no obligation to participate except they are interested in this proposed study.
All potential participants approached will be given information leaflet for the study and a consent form to sign as they are to participate voluntarily.
