  • Research summary

One in every 600-700 children in the UK is born with a cleft lip and/or palate. Poor self-image, behavioural difficulties, and increased levels of depression have been reported amongst children and young people with this condition. Research, however, does not consistently show that young people with a cleft demonstrate psychosocial adjustment difficulties. Evidence from parents and adults affected by this condition report a number of positive outcomes including resilience i.e.‘bouncing back’ and successfully negotiating adversity.

Research examining resilience in young people with a cleft lip and/or palate is limited. The proposed study aims to examine which variables are predictive of resilience in this population. This knowledge will develop our understanding of protective factors to provide a framework for possible clinical psychological interventions for young people experiencing difficulties as a result of their cleft; support those who already thrive, to do so at higher levels, and inform service development.

Approximately 750 young people aged 12-16 years under the care of the North West, Isle of Man and North Wales Cleft Lip and Palate Network will be invited to participate in this questionnaire based study.

Two methods of recruitment are proposed. In the first instance, potential participants will be invited via post to complete questionnaires on a secure online survey site. However, should insufficient responses be obtained by this method, participants will be recruited via the multidisciplinary cleft and orthodontic cleft clinics based at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires examining: resilience; relationships with their peers and family; their satisfaction with different aspects of their appearance; and their coping strategy use. It is anticipated that it will take young people approximately 20 minutes to complete the aforementioned questionnaires which will be administered at one time point only.
