Research summary
Depression is most often managed by General Practitioners (GP’s) in Primary Care settings and antidepressants are the main treatment to reduce its negative impact on patients. GP’s in the United Kingdom (UK) only have 10 minutes to assess and prescribe anti-depressants for patients suffering with depression. In addition to this, approximately 6/10 patients presenting with depression are initially prescribed an inappropriate antidepressant medication.
This research is being completed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals who are interested in developing the most effective treatments for depression in GP practices. The focus of this project is to conduct a test (feasibility) trial of a piece of health technology that supports GPs in their decision-making on anti-depressant prescribing.
We are working with our Industry Partner (Taliaz) to test their artificial intelligence (AI) based prediction system called Predictix. The technology essentially produces a decision about the likely most effective anti-depressant to then be prescribed. The technology has previously been shown to increase prescribing accuracy by 60-70%.
The study setting will be in GP practices. The recruitment period will be 3-months, the data collection period will be 6-months.The design will be a mixed methods design combining statistical findings with interview findings from GP’s, Patients and Psychological wellbeing practitioners (PWP’s). The study aims to test:
• The feasibility of using the system within a GP practice,
• Effectiveness of the system and the rate at which the GP ‘overrules’ the prediction made by Predictix
• Safety, in terms of the serious and incident rate.
• GPs, PWP’s and patients will be interviewed about their experience of using Predictix to understand its usefulness and gather qualitative data.REC name
