  • Research summary

Smooth muscle antibodies are associated with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). However, there are three forms of smooth muscle antibody (SMA), a number of ways of testing for these antibodies, and no data on outcomes for patients with a positive antibody test and normal liver function.
This research aims to determine the prognosis for these patients by:
    (i) establishing 10+ year outcomes from a large cohort of patients with SMA and normal liver function
(ii) establishing shorter term outcomes for a smaller group of patients that had SMA tested by a number of methods as part of a method evaluation.
This study will enable more informed advice and guidance to doctors and patients regarding prognosis and appropriate followup.
