Research summary
It is known that patients are less satisfied with the care they receive within clinical decision units (CDUs) compared with elective and specialist hospital care. Sullivan et al's (2013) analysis of the NHS in patient survey data reported that patients are particularly dissatisfied with pain control, privacy, the information they receive, their involvement in their care, and discharge.
This research project is part of a larger project which has two aims. Firstly, to improve the care within an CDU by carrying out a video reflexive ethnography (VRE) improvement project. Secondly to evaluate the use of VRE as an approach to service improvement, in particular its acceptability to staff and the extent to which service improvement occurs.
Conducting a VRE improvement project involves the following steps:
1. The care team agree the focus of the improvement project and what will be videoed.
2. Videoing is undertaken.
3. The video footage is edited into a 10 minute selection of clips.
4. The care team watch the film and reflect on how they can improve care.
5. The improvement is implemented. This study involves 2 focus groups which are the first step of the VRE process outlined above.
