Research summary
The current global financial environment is driving healthcare institutions to find innovative methods to improve efficiency without compromising quality. A recent McKinsey review of operating theatre and catheter lab use at Imperial College NHS Trust (CPG4) has demonstrated significant failures in efficiency, which are commonly preventable and may lead to significant cost savings with effective resolution strategies. This situation is mirrored in many other clinical environments. Our preliminary research in vascular and endovascular surgery has highlighted some of the root causes for these inefficiencies and also important failures that have the potential to lead to patient harm. These efficiency and safety failures are common throughout NHS organisations, many of which are preventable with adequate and timely planning.
Our aim is to test the introduction of a specifically developed virtual pre-operative planning process, involving all relevant staff, using existing technology with a view to improving planning, set up and efficient running of a theatre as well as tackle significant patient safety issues.
We envisage that introduction of the virtual pre-operative planning application described here is one essential element in the development of an overarching care pathway for all patients that enhances communication between relevant staff, which allows new efficient ways of working throughout the multiple steps of the patient journey during any illness or treatment.
