Research summary
This study aims to compare a handheld ultrasound scanner with the full-sized ultrasound machines used as standard in the echo laboratory, in patients attending for an echocardiogram prior to non-cardiac surgery. The ability of the handheld machine to answer specific key questions will be studied.
The preoperative scan on the handheld device involves obtaining a series of standard echocardiographic views, which will take between 3-7 minutes to perform. The images will then be reported on a tick-sheet by the echocardiographer performing the scan. A different echocardiographer will then perform the full sized study as per normal procedure (hence this is a blinded study).
Data from 60 patients will be collected retrospectively, together with collection of data from a further 36 patients, in order to reach our power calculation of 96 patients.
