Research summary
This is a low risk/non-invasive RCT pilot study which involves midwives giving vulnerable expectant mothers packs of books and rhymes, and guidance about talking, reading, singing and saying rhymes to their unborn baby. The aim is to assess whether this simple intervention is of benefit to these mothers and their babies in terms of emotional attachment and early literacy development. Packs will be given twice before birth and once after birth when the baby is around 2 weeks old. There will be two groups of participants (all expectant mothers), one group will receive the programme as described above and the other group will not. A short (10 minute) telephone survey will be conducted with all participants at 3 time points: before they receive the first pack (around 19-24 weeks of pregnancy), later in the pregnancy (at around 27-33 weeks pregnancy)and when the child is at least 3 weeks old.
