Research summary
Kidney disease affects about 1 in 30 (3%) of those of reproductive age. Most persons with kidney disease have successful pregnancies and healthy babies. However, those with kidney disease have an increased chance of pregnancy complications including early delivery and smaller babies.
There is very little knowledge about the longer term health and development of children after pregnancy with kidney disease. The information we have suggests that these children do not have extra health problems, but we need to get more information. This study will help us to advise people with CKD thinking about pregnancy about the future health of their children. If we do find patterns of longer term problems it will allow us to plan health checks to make sure they are picked up early.
