Research summary
SNBTS is currently undertaking a study into the isolation and expansion of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) from a variety of sources, including umbilical cord blood, peripheral blood, pancreatic fat and pancreatic tissue. MSC have been demonstrated in the literature to have potentially beneficial effects in controlling immune responses in vivo. The eventual aim is for SNBTS to produce these cells at a clinical grade for use with transplants such as pancreatic islets to improve the outcomes. Umbilical cord contains a type of tissue called Wharton's Jelly which is a rich source of active, proliferative cells. Since this tissue is normally discarded after delivery we wish to investigate the feasibility of preparing cell banks from this source.
