Research summary
The aim of this work is to look at the data that we have for all our patients who have had oesophagectomies for cancer resections, and who have also had a 'new' exercise test (CPET). We believe that by examining this data set we may be able to see which features of the exercise test predict the patients that will do well or less well (suffering complications and morbidity) after surgery.
The data from CPET has been used in other patient groups to predict perioperative risk and to identify patients at higher operative risk and improve their care. The data for this group of oesophagectomy patient is limited at the moment (2 previous UK reports) and inconclusive. We feel that with the largest surgical centre in the UK we should be able to look at a larger data set and improve our knowledge and ability to predict problems.REC name
