  • Research summary

The purpose of this research is to observe the postoperative dietary intake of older adult hip fracture patients.
The study will consist of a weighed food diary, that will commence on day 1 after surgery which will record the dietary intake of the participant and will conclude at the end of day 3 after surgery.

At every mealtime, the student researcher will weigh the participants food before and after their meals using a digital scale. This method is more accurate than relying on participant recall and will not place the participant under any unnecessary stress. The student researcher will not handle any food - the catering staff will place the plate on a digital scale for the student researcher to record the data.

The plate will then be weighed after the meal tray has been retrieved by the catering staff. Should a food be pre-packed with a weight - such as a boxed sandwich or a yoghurt, the student researcher will record the weight stated on the packaging. Drinks will recorded and the student researcher will check with the ward staff how many jugs of water the participant has consumed daily. Additionally, observations will be recorded such as if a participant has left a particular food group (for example, meat). The student researcher will not be present during the participants meal time nor disrupt the participant. After the meal time has concluded, the student researcher will ask the participant if they have had any additional snacks between meals or supplements.
Baseline data will be also be obtained from medical records for gender, ager, ethnicity, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol intake, residence before admission, mobility for admission and past medical history.
