  • Research summary

Post-cholecystectomy syndrome is used to describe the persistence or occurrence of abdominal pain after cholecystectomy (surgical removal of the gallbladder). In adults it is reported to occur in 4-7% of patients and is more common in women and those that are overweight. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of post-cholecystectomy symptoms in the paediatric population. We intend to investigate this by inviting patients who have undergone a cholecystectomy, to complete a pre-validated questionnaire (PedsQL Gastrointestinal scale)(Varni et al., 2015) which provides an assessment of gastrointestinal symptoms which can occur following this surgery.

This study will allow us to understand the prevalence of ongoing post-operative symptoms in our cohort of patients. We will also review our findings with a retrospective comparison of pre-operative symptoms and patient characteristics, which may help us to identify patients that are more likely to develop these complications. We would use this data to guide our clinical recommendations for cholecystectomy in children with specific pre-operative symptoms/characteristics which increase the risk of post-operative complications/symptoms.

We will use a retrospective cross-sectional design and invite patients (<18 years of age)/families that have undergone cholecystectomy to participate in a research questionnaire to assess the degree and significance of their post-operative symptoms. Consent will be taken from eligible patients via telephone consultation and completion of the questionnaire will confirm consent for participation.

The study will be conducted from King's College Hospital, and questionnaires will be sent to patients homes/email accounts (following verbal consent).

The study will start in April 2023 and analysis of returned questionnaires will commence August 2023.
