Research summary
Ankle fractures are a common injury and may be treated with either conservative or surgical management. Despite fixation of the fracture, patients may suffer considerable pain and discomfort not only after surgery but also on discharge from hospital. Peripheral nerve blockade, and in particular continuous postoperative nerve block, has been shown to not only improve postoperative pain control but may also have a role in the reduction of chronic post-surgical pain. This study aims to determine the effect on both acute and chronic pain measurements of continuous popliteal nerve block in patients undergoing operative repair of ankle fracture.
