Research summary
Heart failure means the heart cannot pump blood around the body properly. It is one of the biggest health challenges in the National Health Service; although it impacts everyone with that condition, people with Black or South Asian background seem to be mostly affected primarily due to the high prevalence of diabetes causing cardiovascular disease and this then gets further compounded by various language barriers to access health care. Imperial College NHS Trust is located in West London and has a mixture of white and various ethnic minority patients.
It is vital that heart failure patients follow their medication, nutrition, fluid intake and mobility plan. Post-Operative Protocol for 60 days (POP-60) is a one-year project to gather information on whether a mobile application called 'Avatr' can support people at risk of heart failure to keep up with their plan post-cardiac surgery after they have been discharged from the hospital.
This study aims to test the feasibility of implementing Avatr into routine post-operative care as a supporting tool for the patient recovery period and assess its potential for improving patient outcomes and saving NHS costs.
In this study, the clinical team will recruit 40 patients and randomise them into two groups in 1:1 ratio (20 patients in the control group/ 20 patients in the intervention group) before they get discharged from the Hammersmith Hospital post-cardiac surgery.
Both groups will undergo standard post-operative care, but in addition, the 20 patients in the intervention group will be invited to download the Avatr app on their smartphones to interact between discharge and the 6-8 week follow-up assessment.
During the period between discharge and the 6-8 weeks follow-up assessments, patients in the intervention group will interact with the Avatr app. The patients' demographics, medication history, and nutritional & mobility habits will be shared by the participant via the Avatr app in a pseudonymised format.
The application will support the patients' post-discharge care plan by sending prompts and reminders to the patients to take their medication, improve their nutritional & fluid intake habits and mobilise throughout the day.
Ipsos will translate the data collected by producing a health economics analysis to better understand the potential economic impact on the NHS.
