  • Research summary

Heart failure means the heart cannot pump blood around the body properly. It is one of the biggest health challenges in the National Health Service, and it impacts more on people who are Black or South Asian.

It is vital that people at risk of heart failure take medications, eat well, and exercise as prescribed. Unfortunately, many services provided by the NHS do not cater to the needs of Black and South Asian communities, such as making sure information is in an appropriate language, and that recommendations for diet fit with a patient’s culture. Post-Operative Protocol for 60 days (POP-60) is a one-year project to gather evidence on whether a Mobile Application can help people at risk of heart failure to stay well and out of the hospital.

Imperial College NHS Trust does many heart operations for Black and South Asian patients. In this study, Imperial will recruit 100 patients being discharged at Hammersmith Hospital. A random selection of 50 patients will be given a Mobile Application to help them for 60 days after they leave the hospital, and the other 50 will not receive the mobile Application. We will gather information throughout the study to help the NHS to decide if the Mobile Application is helpful to patients. For example, does the Mobile Application help people feel more confident about their care after they leave the hospital? And does the Mobile Application help keep people at home and out of the hospital?

Throughout the study, the NHS doctors and scientists will provide progress updates through webinars and events at the hospital. There will be opportunities for the public to contribute to the POP-60 study at each stage. Ipsos will contribute a health economics analysis based on information collected during the study. Inavya will provide its Mobile Application called Avatr.
