Research summary
The health effects of air pollution have been subject to intense study in the last 70 years. This project aims to analyse the impact of pollution on the economic costs of public healthcare in Leicester using proprietary data from the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. The different types of air pollutants we are analysing affect children and the elderly more severely, and also differentially affect already admitted patients. In this context, days with higher levels of pollution exhibit higher numbers of hospital admissions, and more severe conditions for already admitted patients at the hospital. These higher numbers translate to higher economic costs for the NHS. In this context and by quantifying the higher economic costs for the healthcare system in the area due to air pollution, we can inform the debate on how to allocate council resources in Leicester.
We are requesting data from 01/01/2006 to 31/12/2011. The reason for this request is that is the timeframe of the pollution data we already aquired from the Leicester City Council.REC name
